– The unprecedented level of greenhouse gas levels (GHGs) in the atmosphere is primarily attributed to the rapid warming of the planet.
– Gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide trap incoming solar radiation in the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
– The report states that greenhouse gases are increasing, and the previous decade was the warmest. Land and water temperatures are rising rapidly.
– Heatwaves are occurring in many parts of the world, leading to an increase in sea temperatures.
– Glaciers face the biggest threat because the rapid increase in temperature has accelerated their melting process, disrupting the environmental balance.
– According to the report, 90% of the marine areas are experiencing heatwaves. The most significant glacier melting has occurred since 1950.

– Liver oil (squalene) is used as a lubricant, in cosmetics, and as a source of Vitamin A.
– Cartilage is used for extracting chondroitin sulfate for pharmaceuticals.
– Jaws and teeth are used for making artifacts.

Where are the Parts Sent?
– The report states that the seized parts were sent to Singapore, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Sri Lanka, and China.

Purpose of the Released Report:
– The purpose of this report is to raise awareness about the illegal trade of sharks in India.
– And to highlight the threats faced by these species and concerns related to their conservation.

Highest Conservation Status of Sharks:
– According to The Hindu newspaper, out of the 160 shark species reported in India, only 26 have been listed under Schedule I and II of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, providing them with the highest conservation status.

Note: Globally, there are over 500 species of sharks.
