2. While delivering its verdict on insurance compensation for homemakers who died in road accidents, what status did the Supreme Court give to women who manage households?
a. Nation Builder
b. Family Builder
c. Head of the Family
d. Key Decision-Maker
Answer: a. Nation Builder
Historic Supreme Court Judgment on Compensation for Homemakers
– New Rule: A Bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh ruled that in the event of a homemaker’s death in a road accident, the value of her work should be considered at least ₹30,000 per month (₹3.6 lakh annually). This amount will be in addition to the principles laid down in the Pranay Sethi case.
– Change: Earlier, tribunals used the minimum wages fixed by states (which were often very low) as the basis for determining a homemaker’s “notional income.” The Supreme Court has now recognized a homemaker’s work as a separate and clearly defined category for compensation.
Main Observations of the Court
– The contribution of a homemaker is invaluable; she prepares the next generation. It cannot be undervalued by comparing it with any professional occupation.
– While determining compensation, factors such as the woman’s age, education, skills, and family responsibilities should also be taken into account.
– Compensation should neither be like a lottery nor so low that it becomes a mockery of justice.
– Claims related to road accidents should be disposed of within one year.
– The Supreme Court directed the Chief Justices of all High Courts to personally monitor compliance with this timeline.
Background of the Case
– The case related to a woman named Reshma from Punjab, who died in a road accident in November 2001.
– After proceedings before the Tribunal, the Punjab and Haryana High Court awarded compensation of more than ₹8 lakh in December 2024.
– When the matter reached the Supreme Court, the Court strongly objected to the delay of more than two decades in delivering justice.

6. What was the retail inflation rate in India in May 2026?
a. 2.25%
b. 2.33%
c. 3.4%
d. 3.93%
Answer: d. 3.93%

Retail Inflation
– The pace of retail inflation in the country has once again registered an increase.
– In May 2026, the retail inflation rate rose to 3.93%, compared to 3.48% in April 2026.
– This is the first time in the last five months that retail inflation has come very close to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) target of 4%.
– The new base year for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is 2024.
Food Inflation
– The biggest reason for the rise in retail inflation this time is the increase in food prices.
– Consumer food inflation rose to 4.78% in May, compared to 4.20% in April.
Rural vs Urban Areas
Food inflation was higher in rural India than in urban areas:
Rural areas: 4.85%
Urban areas: 4.66%
Who Releases the Retail Inflation Report?
– NSO (National Statistical Office)
– It functions under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
How is Retail Inflation Determined?
– It is determined through the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
– Inflation is calculated for food items, fruits, clothing, footwear, housing, fuel, electricity, and other goods and services.
– NSO collects real-time price data from 1,407 selected urban markets (including online markets) and 1,465 villages, covering all States and Union Territories.
– As consumers, we purchase goods and services from the retail market. CPI reflects the changes in the prices of those goods and services.
– CPI measures the average price paid by consumers for goods and services.
How Does Inflation Affect People?
– Inflation is directly related to purchasing power.
For example, if the inflation rate is 6%, the effective value of ₹100 becomes only ₹94.
– Therefore, investments should always be planned keeping inflation in mind; otherwise, the value of money decreases over time.
Inflation Range Set by RBI
– RBI has fixed the inflation target at 4%, based on CPI.
However, a variation of ±2% is permitted.
– Thus, inflation below 2% or above 6% is not considered healthy for the country’s economic growth.
How Does RBI Control Inflation?
– To control inflation, liquidity (the flow of money) in the market is reduced.
– RBI does this by increasing or decreasing the Repo Rate.
– When inflation rises, RBI increases the Repo Rate.
– When inflation becomes very low, RBI reduces the Repo Rate.
– Inflation has been reported to be under control for some time; therefore, RBI had earlier kept the Repo Rate unchanged for nine consecutive policy reviews.

Reasons for the Increase
– Inflation has increased due to the rise in prices of essential commodities and fuel.
– Prices of grains and edible oils have also increased.
– Tensions between the United States and Iran have continued for nearly three and a half months.
– If the situation does not normalize, inflation may increase further.
– This may eventually affect CPI-based retail inflation as well.

8. RBI did not make any change in the Repo Rate during the Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Review (June 2026). What is the Repo Rate?
a. 4.25%
b. 5.01%
c. 5.25%
d. 5.57%

– Revision in growth forecast: The projected real GDP growth rate for 2026–27 has been reduced from 6.9% to 6.6%.
When Was the Repo Rate Last Reduced?
– In December 2025, the Monetary Policy Committee reduced the Repo Rate by 25 basis points, from 5.50% to 5.25%.
What is the Repo Rate?
– Simply put, banks provide loans to us and charge interest on those loans.
– Similarly, banks also borrow money from RBI for their day-to-day operations.
– The rate of interest charged by RBI on such loans is called the Repo Rate (Repurchase Rate).
Impact of Repo Rate on Common People
– Repo Rate is one of RBI’s most powerful tools to fight inflation.
– When inflation becomes very high, RBI increases the Repo Rate to reduce money flow in the economy.
– When banks can borrow at lower interest rates from RBI, they can offer cheaper loans to customers.
Conversely, when RBI raises the Repo Rate, borrowing becomes costlier for banks and they pass on the higher costs to customers through more expensive loans.
Reverse Repo Rate
– Reverse Repo Rate works in the opposite manner to the Repo Rate.
– At the end of the day, banks often have surplus funds.
– They deposit these funds with RBI.
– RBI pays interest on these deposits.
– The rate at which RBI pays interest is called the Reverse Repo Rate.
Note
– The ex-officio Chairperson of the 6-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is the RBI Governor.
