Depth of the Great Blue Hole
– Scientists have not yet measured its full depth, but according to initial estimates, it is approximately 1,380 feet (420 meters) deep and lies beneath the ocean’s surface.
– Scientists used conductivity, temperature, and depth profilers (CTD) to measure its depth. This provides real-time data of the ocean’s depths.
– This reveals that it is the world’s deepest blue hole, where no diver or submarine has reached its bottom yet.
– Due to challenging access conditions, the exploration of blue holes has been limited because most blue holes have small openings hundreds of feet below the water’s surface, making them inaccessible to conventional submarines.

Previous Record Holder for Deepest Blue Hole
– Before this, the record for the deepest hole was held by the Dragon Hole in the South China Sea.
– It was 990 feet deep, whereas the Great Blue Hole surpasses the Chinese hole by 390 feet.

What is a Blue Hole?
– A blue hole is a large sinkhole or vertical cave found in the seabed.
– They are formed by the dissolution of carbonate rocks and are filled with water.
– Blue holes are distinct from the surrounding seawater and typically contain fresh groundwater rather than seawater.
– They have open and circular entrances, and their walls are vertical. Blue holes usually contain water with distinct physical and chemical properties, such as being fresh, marine, or mixed.
– Most of their depth extends below the seafloor, and they can also feature submerged cave systems.
– Blue holes have little to no oxygen and only sunlight reaches their mouths.
– However, scientists believe that life may exist in blue holes.
Note: The deepest part of the ocean (Mariana Trench: approximately 36,000 feet) is in the Pacific Ocean.
