Objectives and Scope

– 2001 (After the 9/11 attacks): Expanded to include combating terrorist financing.
– 2012: Further expanded to include preventing the financing of the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD).
– FATF is a policy-making body. It does not make legally binding laws but sets international standards known as the FATF 40 Recommendations.
Importance for India
– Containing cross-border terrorism: FATF has served as an effective diplomatic platform for India to build international pressure on Pakistan to stop terrorist financing (such as financial support to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed). Pakistan remained on the Grey List for a long time.
