What happened?
– A laboratory worker died of plague in the Irkutsk region of Siberia, Russia.
– Following this case, around 200 people were placed under medical observation.
– Officials in Irkutsk initially described the disease as a “particularly dangerous infection.”
– Impact on India: Negligible for now, no spread.

Who confirmed it?
– The head of the neighboring Republic of Buryatia, Alexey Tsydenov, confirmed the woman’s death from plague.
– He did not share detailed information.
– Governor Igor Kobzev did not mention the woman’s death in his statement.

Who was the woman and what happened?
– The female researcher has been identified as Daria Sh. (Daria Sh.), aged 27 or 28 years.
– She was working at the Anti-Plague Institute in Irkutsk.
– On 29 September 2026, she was admitted to a hospital in the city of Shelekhov with symptoms of severe pneumonia.
– She was placed on ventilator support and died on 1 October 2026.

How did the infection occur?
– It has been reported that while collecting samples, a test tube containing live bacteria accidentally broke.
– Officials said the situation is stable, there is no other case, and the tests are negative.

What is plague?
– According to the World Health Organization (WHO), plague is caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium.
– It is a zoonotic bacterium, which is usually found in small mammals and their fleas.
– Symptoms can generally develop in infected people after 1 to 7 days.
– Bubonic plague is the most common clinical form of plague.
– Risk: Without treatment, it is almost 100% fatal, but it can be treated quickly with antibiotics. Spread is limited (through close contact), not like corona.

Possible type
– According to media reports, the possible infection in this case has been described as “pneumonic plague.”
– Pneumonic plague affects the lungs and can be contagious.

When did the world last see a major plague?
– The last major global pandemic of plague was the “Third Plague Pandemic.”
– It began in Yunnan, China, in 1855.
– This pandemic lasted until around 1960.
