What is GDP?
– Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one of the most common indicators used to track the health of an economy.
– GDP refers to the total value of all goods and services produced in a country in a particular year or quarter.
– GDP is the biggest measure of the economic growth of a country.
– Higher GDP means that the country is experiencing economic growth and the economy is generating more employment.
– Lower GDP means that the country is lagging economically and the problem of unemployment is increasing.
It is calculated as > GDP = C + I + G + (X-M)
C = Consumer Expenditures
I = Industries Investment
G = Government Expenditure
X = Export

What is GVA?
– In simple words, GVA indicates the total output and income generated in an economy.
– It tells us how many rupees worth of goods and services were produced during a given period after deducting the input cost and the price of raw materials. Subsidies are removed from it.
– It also indicates how much production has taken place in a particular sector, industry, or sector.
– From the perspective of national accounting, at the macro level, the figure obtained in GDP after removing subsidies and taxes is GVA.
Difference between Real GDP and Nominal GDP
– Real GDP (Constant Price): The total value of goods and services produced in a country in one year, at the fixed prices of a specific base year. The effect of inflation is removed from it.
– Nominal GDP (at Current Prices): The total value of final goods and services produced in a country in one year, at current prices. It is compared on the basis of the previous year.
New Base Year for Gross Domestic Product (GDP): 2022-23
– The base year is the year considered as the original reference year for measuring GDP and other national income figures.
– By considering the prices of this year as constant, the real growth rate is calculated.
– Earlier, figures were released on the basis of the base year 2011-12.
– Example: If a pen cost 5 rupees in 2011 and costs 10 rupees today. If we are still producing 100 pens today, then according to 2011, GDP would be shown as 500 rupees.
– Whereas according to today’s prices, it would be 1000 rupees. The base year helps us understand whether we are producing more pens or the pen has simply become more expensive.
