6 Major Reasons Behind the Gen-Z Movement
1. Ban on 26 Social Media Platforms : The government’s decision to ban 26 social media platforms triggered widespread outrage among Gen-Z youth.
2. Corruption, Inflation, Unemployment & Nepotism : Gen-Z was disillusioned by rising corruption, inflation, and unemployment.
Nepotism and favoritism in government appointments became a hot topic on social media, especially as political elites’ children flaunted foreign trips, luxury brands, and lavish parties.
The “Nepo Baby” campaign from the Philippines and Indonesia also started trending in Nepal.
When the government imposed a ban on social media, Gen-Z perceived it as an attack on freedom of expression.
3. Three big scams: In 4 years, 3 big scams came to light. In 2021, the Giri Bandhu land swap scam worth ₹54,600 crore, in 2023 the Oriental Cooperative scam worth ₹13,600 crore, and in 2024 the Cooperative scam worth ₹69,600 crore. This increased the anger of the youth towards the government.
4. Political Instability: Political instability: In 5 years, 3 governments came. Sher Bahadur Deuba became PM in July 2021. Prachanda became PM in December 2022. Oli came in July 2024.
5. Unemployment-economic inequality: The unemployment rate was 10.39% in 2019, now it is 10.71%. The inflation rate was 4.6% in 2019, now it is 5.2%. Economic inequality prevails. 20% of people own 56% of the wealth.
6. Foreign pressure: When Oli came to power, the tilt towards China increased. Earlier, governments took many decisions under American influence. During the social media ban, only the Chinese app TikTok kept running. The youth feel that Nepal is being used like a pawn under the pressure of big countries.
