1. An asteroid has entered the Earth’s orbit for two and a half months and is being called a mini-moon. Name it.

a. 2022NX1
b. 2024 PK2
c. 2024 PR3
d. 2024 PT5

Answer: d. 2024 PT5

– Earth has received a small moon for about two and a half months.
– This mini moon is actually an asteroid named 2024 PT5.
– It was discovered on August 7 by the NASA-funded ‘Terrestrial Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS).’
– Its diameter is approximately 10 meters (around 33 feet).
– It will become a mini-moon from September 29 to November 25, 2024, following a horseshoe-shaped path. This means it will fully remain in Earth’s orbit during this period.

Asteroid to return to the Sun’s orbit after Earth’s gravity:
– After November 25, the 2024 PT5 asteroid will break free from Earth’s gravity and return to the Sun’s orbit.
– In fact, while orbiting the Sun, this asteroid came close to Earth.
– Due to this, it got pulled by Earth’s gravitational force and started orbiting Earth.
– After November 25, it will move away from Earth, and the gravitational effect on it will end, allowing it to return to its orbit around the Sun.
– Earth regularly captures asteroids from the near-Earth object (NEO) population and pulls them into orbit, turning them into mini moons. – Sometimes, these temporary captures do not even complete one orbit before escaping and returning to their regular Sun-centered trajectory.

Why is it called a Mini Moon?
– Actually, this asteroid is orbiting the Earth like the Moon, which is why it has been named a mini moon.
– Due to its very slow speed, this asteroid will not even be able to complete one orbit around the Earth in the next two months.
– Previously, in 1981 and 2022, Earth also had a mini moon named 2022 NX1.

Will it look like the Moon?
– Many asteroids have orbited the Earth before, but 2024 PT5 will be so faint that it cannot be seen with the naked eye or through telescopes.
– It can only be observed using advanced observatories with a magnitude of 22.

Will help scientists and provide information about space:
– Scientists say that 2024 PT5 will provide information about those space asteroids, including the ones that sometimes collide with Earth.
– It will help scientists better understand its gravitational force.

What are asteroids?
– Asteroids are small rocky bodies that always orbit around the Sun.
– They can be rocky, metallic, or icy objects, and are too small to be considered planets.
– There is an asteroid belt in our solar system that protects us from objects coming from outside the solar system.
– Asteroids generally orbit between the planets Mars and Jupiter.
– There are thousands of asteroids present in our solar system.
– When an asteroid remains in space, it is called an asteroid, but as soon as it enters Earth’s atmosphere, it is called a meteorite.

How dangerous are asteroids?
– In the future, the greatest threat to our planet could come from asteroids.
– After that, there is the risk of climate change or global warming.
– In 2013, an asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere and exploded over Russia, injuring hundreds of people and causing widespread damage.
– Earlier, in 1908, a meteorite struck Siberia in Russia, causing significant damage.
– The end of the dinosaur era was caused by an asteroid colliding with Earth, which significantly increased the planet’s temperature.

There is also a lake in India formed by an asteroid (meteorite):
– This lake is in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, about 500 kilometers from Mumbai.
– An asteroid fell here 50,000 years ago, traveling at a speed of 90,000 kilometers per hour.
– It created a deep crater, which led to the formation of the lake.
– It is believed that the meteorite weighed one million tons, which created a large crater.
– The lake spans 1.85 kilometers in diameter.
It is up to 500 feet deep.
– The water is saline, and just one meter below the surface, oxygen levels are extremely low (almost negligible).
– Lonar Lake has been a subject of curiosity and study for scientists worldwide.
– This lake is a designated National Geological Heritage Monument.
