10. RBI did not change the repo rate for the ninth time in the bi-monthly monetary policy review (August 2024), what is this repo rate?

a. 5.5%
b. 5.8%
c. 6.2%
d. 6.5%

Answer: d. 6.5%

Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Decision:
– In its first meeting after the central budget, the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 6.50% for the ninth consecutive time.
– Out of the six MPC members, four voted in favor of this decision, which aims to control inflation.
– The MPC meeting was held on August 8, 2024.
– As a result, the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate remains at 6.25%, while the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate remain at 6.75%.

Repo Rate (Repurchase Rate) Explained:
– In simple terms, when banks lend money to us, they charge us interest. Similarly, banks also need large amounts of money for their day-to-day operations and borrow from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
– The interest rate at which the RBI charges banks for this loan is known as the repo rate.

Impact of Repo Rate on the Common Man:
– The RBI uses the repo rate as a tool to combat inflation.
– When inflation is high, the RBI may increase the repo rate to reduce the flow of money in the economy, aiming to cool down inflation.
– Conversely, if the repo rate is low, banks can borrow money at a lower cost and may offer cheaper loans to their customers.
– If the RBI raises the repo rate, borrowing becomes more expensive for banks, which in turn makes loans more costly for customers.

Reverse Repo Rate
– This is the opposite of the repo rate.
– When banks have a large amount of money left after the day’s work, they deposit that amount in the Reserve Bank.
– RBI gives them interest on this amount.
– The rate at which the Reserve Bank gives interest on this amount is called the reverse repo rate.
