– President Draupadi Murmu conferred four awards posthumously on March 30, 2024. – These awards were received by their family members.

Lal Krishna Advani was honored at his home.
– Due to poor health, he couldn’t attend the ceremony.
– Therefore, on March 31, 2024, President Draupadi Murmu honored Lal Krishna Advani, senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the Bharat Ratna at his residence in Delhi.
– On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu were also present.

About the five award recipients:
1- Chaudhary Charan Singh was the fifth Prime Minister of the country.
2- Narsimha Rao was the ninth Prime Minister.
3- Swaminathan was an agricultural scientist. (Father of the Green Revolution)
4- Karpoori Thakur was the former Chief Minister of Bihar.
5- Lal Krishna Advani is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

PM Narendra Modi’s Government’s 10th Bharat Ratna:
– This is the tenth Bharat Ratna conferred by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi since coming to power in 2014.
– A total of 53 individuals have been honored with this award so far.

Chaudhary Charan Singh:
– He was born on December 23, 1902, in a Jat farming family in Nurpur, Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh.
– He participated in the independence movement alongside Mahatma Gandhi.
– He served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from April 3, 1967, to April 17, 1968, and again in 1970.
– He served as the Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in 1979 and established NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development).
– He served as the Prime Minister from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980.
– He passed away on May 29, 1987.

P.V. Narasimha Rao:
– He was born on June 28, 1921.
– He served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 1971 to 1973.
– From June 20, 1991, to May 16, 1996, he served as the 9th Prime Minister of the country.
– He was proficient in 18 languages, including Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Urdu, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Arabic, Persian, Spanish, Bengali, French, German, Greek, and Latin.
– He passed away on December 24, 2004.

Dr. M.S. Swaminathan:
– He was born on August 7, 1925, in Tamil Nadu.
– He was a geneticist known as the father of the Green Revolution in India.
– Under the Green Revolution program, high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice seeds were introduced in fields, transforming India from a food-deficit nation to self-sufficiency.
– He was honored with the Magsaysay Award in 1971, the Albert Einstein World Science Award in 1986, the First World Food Prize in 1987, and the UNESCO Gandhi Gold Medal in 1989.
– He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1967, Padma Bhushan in 1972, and Padma Vibhushan in 1989.
– He passed away on September 28, 2023.

About Bharat Ratna:
– What is it: The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India.
– Establishment: 1954
– Selection Process: The Prime Minister recommends the name of the awardee to the President. There is no formal selection process for this.
– First Recipients: C. Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and C. V. Raman.
What does the award include: The awardee receives a certificate of honor and a bronze medal in the shape of a peepal leaf. The medal features a shining platinum sun on one side, with the Bharat Ratna inscription in silver below. On the other side, “Satyameva Jayate” is inscribed along with the Ashoka Pillar.

Protocol:
– The recipient of this honor gets VIP status.
– In the protocol, the honored individual is placed after the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker of Lok Sabha, Cabinet Ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers, Former Presidents, Former Prime Ministers, Former Chief Ministers, and Leaders of Opposition in both Houses of Parliament.

The individuals who receive the Bharat Ratna are entitled to various privileges:
1. They are given the status equivalent to that of a Cabinet Minister.
2. Recipients of the Bharat Ratna are exempted from paying income tax. They can also participate in parliamentary meetings and sessions.
3. They can participate as special guests in the programs of Independence Day and Republic Day.They receive exemptions for air travel, train travel, and bus travel.
4. If they travel to a state, they are given the status of state guests.
5. According to Article 18(1) of the Constitution, awardees are not allowed to use “Bharat Ratna” as a prefix or suffix to their name. However, they can add “Bharat Ratna” or “Bharat Ratna Awardee” to their biographies, visiting cards, letterheads, etc.
6. Those who receive the Bharat Ratna are included in the Warrant of Precedence issued by the government. The Warrant of Precedence is used to determine precedence in government programs.
7. State governments provide facilities to the recipients of the Bharat Ratna in their respective states.
