7. By how much did the RBI increase the repo rate to in its bimonthly monetary policy review in October 2026, raising it by 25 basis points?

a. 4.25%
b. 5.01%
c. 5.25%
d. 5.50%

Answer: d. 5.50%

– The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decided to increase the repo rate by 25 basis points (0.25%) to 5.50% during its October 2026 review meeting.

When Was the Repo Rate Last Reduced?
– This increase came after approximately three and a half years.
– In December 2025, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) reduced the repo rate by 25 basis points, from 5.50% to 5.25%.
– After that, the repo rate was increased to 5.50% in October 2026.
– The RBI changed the stance of monetary policy from ‘Neutral’ to ‘Calibrated Tightening’. This indicates that an interest rate cut is unlikely in the near future.

Reasons for the Repo Rate Increase
– Rising Inflation: Due to tensions in West Asia, crude oil prices have crossed $100 per barrel. In addition, weak monsoon conditions and the effects of El Niño have caused food prices to rise.
– Preventing Second-Round Effects: The RBI had to take this step to prevent rising crude oil and food prices from spreading into broader inflation across the economy.
– Strong Economic Growth: The Indian economy is witnessing a good recovery, and the GDP growth forecast for FY27 has been increased to 7.1%. Strong growth has provided an opportunity to control inflation without damaging the economy.
– Pressure on the Rupee: Interest rates had to be increased to protect the rupee from depreciation amid global uncertainty and a strong dollar, and to reduce imported inflation.

b. CBD Ground
c. Burari Ground

– In October 2026, following the recommendations of a committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground in East Delhi were designated as protest venues.
– The Ministry of Home Affairs had formed a committee to identify alternative locations for organising protests and sit-ins.
– A revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) regarding the procedures and rules for organising sit-ins and protests at Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground will be issued separately.
– The government had designated Jantar Mantar as a protest venue 33 years ago.
– The Anna Movement (2011) and the wrestlers’ protest (2023) took place there.
– In 2026, a protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) also took place there.

The Issue Began with the CJP Sit-In on 10 October
