3. In which country the developed world’s first wooden-panelled satellite was launched into space?

a. Germany
b. Japan
c. France
d. USA

Answer: b. Japan

Key Points about the Satellite:
– Name of the Wooden-Panel Satellite: LignoSat (named after the Latin word for wood)
– Dimensions: Length – 4 inches (10 centimeters)
– Weight: 900 grams
– Wood Used: The panels are made from Magnolia wood, assembled without screws or glue, using a traditional Japanese craft technique.
– Developed By: Kyoto University and homebuilder Sumitomo Forestry

When and How Was It Launched?
– On November 5, it was sent to the International Space Station (ISS) via SpaceX’s Dragon cargo capsule.
– One month later, it will be released into Earth’s orbit, where it will remain for six months.

Why a Wooden Satellite?
– Researchers at Kyoto University believe wood could replace certain metals used in space exploration.
– Using wood isn’t entirely new. Kyoto University’s forestry professor, Koji Murata, told Reuters, “Airplanes in the early 1900s were made of wood. So, a wooden satellite should also be possible.”
– Wood is more durable in space than on Earth since space lacks water or oxygen, which would cause it to rot or burn.

Testing Durability in Space Temperature Extremes
– The satellite will test the durability of wood in extreme space conditions.
– In space, temperatures fluctuate from -100°C to 100°C every 45 minutes as objects move between sunlight and darkness.
– It will also test wood’s ability to reduce the effects of space radiation on semiconductors.

Is it Made Entirely of Wood?
– LignoSat is not entirely made of wood. It features traditional aluminum structures and electronic components within a wooden-panel casing.
– Its sensors will monitor how wood responds to the extreme space environment during its six-month orbit around Earth.

Goal of Growing Trees and Building Houses on the Moon and Mars
– Kyoto University’s Takao Doi and his team aim to plant trees and build wooden houses on the Moon and Mars within 50 years.
– To support this, they have developed a NASA-certified wooden satellite to prove that wood is a viable material for space.

How Are Traditional Satellites Made?
– Traditional satellites are mainly made of aluminum. At the end of their life, they burn up in Earth’s atmosphere, producing aluminum oxide.
– These gases can harm the Earth’s protective ozone layer.
– The increase in orbital population, including large artificial constellations like SpaceX’s Starlink broadband network with 6,500 active satellites, raises concerns.
– This is where LignoSat has an advantage. Using magnolia instead of aluminum means that when the satellite returns to Earth, it won’t release harmful pollutants into the atmosphere.

4. The 29th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) was held in which city?

a. Seoul (South Korea)
b. Dubai (UAE)
c. Delhi (India)
d. Baku (Azerbaijan)

Answer: d. Baku (Azerbaijan)

Event Details:
– Dates: November 11 to November 22, 2024
– Location: Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan

India’s Participation:
– India is focused on sustainable development, energy security, and action.
– Indian officials emphasized the inclusion of the principles and provisions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement at COP29.
– India hopes for progress on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement (carbon markets) and a mechanism that supports low-carbon development using market-based tools like carbon credits.

Key Points:
– The election of Donald Trump had a negative impact on climate talks, as he denies the issue, with a possibility of the U.S. withdrawing from the Paris Agreement.

What is the Paris Climate Agreement?
– The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change.
– It was adopted on December 12, 2015, during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, France, by 196 countries.
– World leaders pledged to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, aiming to keep it “well below” 2.0°C above pre-industrial levels.
– For the first time, nearly all countries agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global warming. The agreement came into effect on November 4, 2016.

The Agreement Lists Several Commitments:
– Push efforts to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C and keep it “well below” 2.0°C above pre-industrial levels.
– Limit greenhouse gas emissions from human activities to a level that trees, soil, and oceans can naturally absorb, known as “net zero” between 2050 and 2100.
– Each country must set its emission reduction targets, with reviews every five years to increase ambitions.
– Wealthy countries will provide climate finance to help poorer countries adapt to climate change and adopt renewable energy.
– In recent years, world leaders have stressed the need to limit global warming to 1.5°C by the end of the century.

Why is Limiting Global Warming to 1.5°C Important?
– Scientists warn that each 0.1°C increase in temperature brings greater risks to the planet – longer heat waves, stronger storms, and more intense wildfires.
– The 1.5°C target was agreed upon because strong evidence shows that as the world nears 2.0°C, the impacts become far more severe, with some changes potentially irreversible.
– Extremely hot days would be 4°C hotter on average in mid-latitude regions at 2.0°C, compared to 3°C at 1.5°C.
– Sea level rise would be 0.1 meters higher at 1.5°C, putting over 10 million more people at risk of frequent flooding.

Note: Under the Paris Climate Agreement, India has set a target of net zero by 2070.
