1. Through radiocarbon dating, the ‘oldest living banyan tree in India’ (over 700 years old) has been certified to be located in which state and district?
a. Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow
b. West Bengal, Howrah
c. Bihar, Munger
d. Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior
Answer: c. Bihar, Munger
– A banyan tree located in Munger, Bihar, has been confirmed to be more than 700 years old. It is considered the oldest living tree in India.
– The Bihar Forest Department has initiated the process to declare it a “Heritage Tree.”
– Due to its hundreds of aerial roots, the tree appears more like a dense forest than a single tree when viewed from a distance.

Geographical and Scientific Facts
– Location: The giant banyan tree is situated inside the campus of the Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) in Munger district, Bihar.
– Research Team: Research began in 2022 under the leadership of scientist Dr. Trina Bose and research scholar Avnish Mishra from BSIP (Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow), following an invitation from the Bihar Forest Department.
– Scientific Evidence: Scientists at BSIP confirmed the tree’s age to be over 700 years through three years of intensive research and advanced radiocarbon dating techniques.
– Scientific Method: Usually, the age of trees is estimated through annual rings (dendrochronology) formed in the trunk. However, banyan trees do not form such rings. Therefore, scientists used radiocarbon dating to determine its precise age.
– The aerial roots (prop roots) of a banyan tree gradually penetrate the ground and develop into new trunks over time.
India’s Second Oldest Tree
– The Great Banyan Tree: Located in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden near Kolkata, West Bengal, this banyan tree is more than 250 years old.
It spreads across 4.67 acres and has more than 3,700 roots.
