1. In which country did two new islands emerge in the sea following the eruption of the ‘Anak Krakatoa’ volcano, which lasted for 25 consecutive hours?

a. India
b. Malaysia
c. Indonesia
d. Japan

Answer: c. Indonesia (This incident occurred in the last week of September)

– Name of the volcano: Anak Krakatoa (Son of Krakatoa)
– Anak Krakatoa means “Child of Krakatoa”
– Location: Indonesia (Sunda Strait located between the islands of Java and Sumatra)
– It is a volcanic island located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra.
– It was formed in 1883 after the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano, which was one of the most devastating volcanic events.
– The September 2026 volcanic eruption increased the land area of Anak Krakatoa volcano by approximately 32.8 hectares or about 0.2 square kilometers, due to lava flows and volcanic materials.

Two islands were formed
– Due to continuous eruptions at the Anak Krakatoa volcano, two new small islands have formed in the Sunda Strait.
– These two new landforms emerged above the sea surface due to lava, ash and rocks (pyroclastic material) deposited after the 25-hour continuous volcanic eruption that occurred in early September 2026.
– This was confirmed through Sentinel satellite imagery on September 23.

Two separate islands
– After the eruption at Anak Krakatoa, the two islands emerged in different directions:
– First island: It was formed approximately 760 meters northwest of the main crater.
– Second island: It was formed approximately 495 meters southeast of the main crater.
– Note – Such new islands formed due to volcanic activity are not always permanent. Due to sea waves, tides and erosion, they may change shape over time or may even disappear.

Why do islands form some distance away from the volcano?
– When a volcano erupts underwater or near the coast, large amounts of hot lava, ash, rocks and tephra are thrown into the air.
– Instead of falling directly over the volcano, these materials are carried by strong winds and sea waves and get deposited in the water 500 to 800 meters away.
– When this debris continuously accumulates at the same place, it gradually rises above the sea surface and takes the form of a separate island.
– Magma from a volcano does not always emerge only from the main central crater. Sometimes, due to excessive pressure, cracks develop in the rocks beneath the main mountain, and magma begins to emerge from the side or from the sea floor.

Most active volcanoes are in Indonesia
– There are 1,500 active volcanoes in the world.
– Among these, the highest number, 130 active volcanoes, are in Indonesia.
– Seven volcanoes have been continuously erupting for the last two years. These are – Krakatau, Merapi, Lewotolok, Karangetang, Semeru, Ibu and Dukono.

Ring of Fire
– This country is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
– The highest amount of geographical and geological activity occurs in this region.
– In the area where Indonesia is located, the Eurasian tectonic plate is moving southward.
– The Indian-Australian tectonic plate is moving northward. The Philippine plate is moving westward.
– Due to collisions or movements among these three plates, volcanoes continue to erupt.

Indonesia
– Capital: Jakarta
– Proposed new capital: Nusantara
– President: Prabowo Subianto
– Population: 280 million
– Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
– Neighboring countries: Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor.
