– The project was launched in 2008 and was originally expected to be completed by 2014, but it continues to face several challenges.
Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project
– At present, the only route connecting mainland India with the northeastern states (such as Assam, Mizoram, and Tripura) is the Siliguri Corridor, popularly known as the Chicken’s Neck.
– This corridor is only about 20–22 kilometres wide.
– It experiences heavy traffic and is strategically sensitive from a security perspective.

– Sittwe Port was inaugurated in May 2023, and the first cargo vessel reached the port soon afterward.
– However, the road segment within Myanmar (from Paletwa to the Indian border) remains delayed because of the country’s internal instability and security challenges.
