Preliminary exam results were out in October 2016. This time a new exam pattern was introduced for mains exam. Sectional timings were introduced for each section in the main exam. So once the time of a section is over, you cannot attempt questions from that section.

Most of the candidates were expecting the IBPS PO main exam to be of the same level as that of SBI PO exam. Moreover it turned to be comparable to some extent.IBPS PO Mains Review, IBPS PO Mains Cutoff, IBPS PO Mains Analysis

Reasoning & Quantitative Aptitude sections were difficult.

The online test consisted of 5 sections with 200 questions in total. Since each section had time limits, candidates were under a sense of pressure throughout the exam duration.

General awareness was the only section that was quickly answerable whereas 90% of the questions in IBPS PO mains ranged between moderate to difficult.

Computer knowledge paper was difficult in certain shifts, as informed to us by candidates. This was quite disappointing because it is considered by many to be the easiest and scoring section. It takes very little time to attempt this section.

  • In the general opinion of the candidates the Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude sections could not have been tougher.

This kind of pattern may not have even been thought about in wildest dreams.

IBPS has now set a new benchmark for mains exam by omitting some common topics. It looks they purposefully set such a high level paper every year due to less vacancies & increasing competition for bank jobs.

Candidates had to spend more time on questions they were not good at, which itself created a feeling of failure.

  • Puzzles, Input/Output, Arguments, Direction questions were like waging a war due to its toughness.

Most of them were able to attend only 8 – 15 questions in each of these two sections which had a total of 100. It is enough to convey the difficulty level.

Low Cutoffs Possible But…

Analysing many candidates responses, we can conclude that the exam did not fall in the “easy” category. It tends to get “moderately difficult” remark because of the following.

  • Not all the sections were difficult.
  • Most candidates have performed well in GK & Computers.
  • Some have managed to attempt nearly 22 – 30 questions in reasoning & aptitude with 100% accuracy.

So the individual cutoff for reasoning & aptitude may go low whereas the total cutoff score need not be necessarily lower.

Calculating Cutoff Scores: IBPS uses normalization method to convert your actual marks into scores and nobody knows that formula.

The difficulty level may be taken into consideration along with the number of vacancies. This year IBPS may consider many observations before declaring the qualifying scores. If they also choose accuracy as a factor to determine the total cutoff, low scores may not be possible.
