8. In which country did a record 43-day government shutdown end on November 12?
a. India
b. France
c. Japan
d. USA
Answer: d. USA
– A shutdown was imposed in the United States on October 1, 2025.
– This was because President Donald Trump was unable to get the budget funding bill passed by the Senate.
– Finally, after a long wait with the opposition, an agreement was reached.
– Then President Donald Trump signed a government funding bill on the night of November 12, 2025, ending a record 43-day government shutdown.
– This government shutdown caused financial stress for federal employees, with no paychecks, stranded numerous travelers at airports, and long lines at some food banks.
When does the fiscal year last in the US?
– October 1st to September 30th of the following year (whereas in India, the fiscal year runs from April 1st to March 31st of the following year).
– The US fiscal year, or spending year, begins on October 1st. This is essentially the government’s financial year, in which it plans its spending and budgets.
– During this period, the government decides where to invest, such as in the military, health, or education. If a new budget is not passed by this date, government operations cease. This is called a shutdown.
How are budgets passed in the US?
– Let’s compare it to India. The Indian government’s budget contains a complete account of expenditures and income. It must be passed by Parliament. This is known as the Finance Bill, whereas the US budget is divided into several parts.
– The US Congress discusses the US budget in its House and Senate committees and prepares 12 related Appropriations Bills.
– Each bill provides legal authorization for expenditures by a department/program.
– If the budget or Appropriations Bills are not passed on time, the government loses legal authorization for expenditures.
– Due to the presidential system, there is no requirement for a majority in the US Parliament. Despite having a majority, if the bill lacks support from the members, it gets stalled.
What does a government shutdown mean?
– In the United States, the government has to pass its budget every year. If Parliament doesn’t agree on the budget, the funding bill isn’t passed, and government funding is stopped.
– Because of this, some government departments and services don’t receive funding. Non-essential services are shut down. This is called a government shutdown.
– Trump has blamed Democrats for this shutdown. He has already threatened to fire government employees.
– After 2019, a government shutdown has occurred in the United States in 2025. Previously, a 35-day shutdown occurred during Trump’s tenure.
On which issue is the opposition not supporting?
– There was a rift between the two major parties in America, the Democrats and the Republicans, over the Obama Healthcare Subsidy Program. Democrats wanted to increase the health care (health insurance) subsidy.
– Republicans feared that if the subsidy were increased, the government would need more money to spend, which would impact other government functions.
– President Trump and Democratic leaders met at the White House on Monday to prevent a shutdown.
In the last 50 years, the US has experienced 20 shutdowns due to stalled funding bills. During Trump’s previous term alone, the government faced three shutdowns.

10. What was the retail inflation rate in October 2025?
a. 1.25%
b. 2.25%
c. 3.25%
d. 0.25%
Answer: d. 0.25%
– Retail inflation fell to a record low of 0.25% in October.
– This is the lowest level in nearly 14 years. This is the lowest inflation ever recorded in the current CPI (Consumer Price Index) series.
– The current CPI series in India is based on the base year of 2012. This means that the prices of 2012 are taken as 100 and compared.
– The reason for low inflation is the decrease in the prices of food items.
– Earlier, it was at 1.44% in September 2025.
Who releases the retail inflation report?
– NSO (National Statistical Office)
– It is under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
How is the retail inflation rate determined?
– It is determined by the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
– It calculates the inflation of food items, fruits, clothing, shoes, housing, fuel, electricity, and other items.
– As consumers, you and I purchase goods from the retail market. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) reflects changes in related prices. The CPI measures the average price we pay for goods and services.
How does inflation affect your investment?
– Inflation is directly related to purchasing power. For example, if the inflation rate is 6%, then ₹100 earned will be worth only ₹94.
– Therefore, investments should be made keeping inflation in mind. Otherwise, the value of your money will decrease.
How does the RBI control inflation?
– To control inflation, the flow of money (liquidity) in the market is reduced.
– To do this, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) increases or decreases the repo rate.
– When inflation rises, the RBI increases the repo rate, and when inflation falls significantly, it decreases the repo rate.
– Inflation has been reported to be under control for some time now, which is why in August, the RBI did not make any changes to the repo rate for the ninth consecutive time.
RBI-Set Inflation Limit
– The RBI-set inflation limit is 4 percent based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). However, this limit can increase or decrease by two percent.
– Thus, inflation below 2 percent and above 6 percent are not conducive to the country’s economic growth.
