Long duration cyclonic storm
– The normal lifespan of a weather system that develops into a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal is up to 4.4 days. However, Cyclone Fengal persisted for a longer period before intensifying.
– The weather system that formed on November 25 took six days to cover a distance of about 500 km. It was unusually slow and remained over the sea for a long time.
– However, Cyclone Bijarjoy, which formed in the Arabian Sea in 2023, remained active for 13 days. It was the longest in 46 years.
India’s east coast vulnerable to cyclones
– Districts located on the east coast of India are highly vulnerable to the impacts of cyclones.
– In view of these risks, the government reduces losses through initiatives like the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP).
How are cyclones formed?
– When a low pressure area is formed in the sea, then a cyclone arises.
– Here the question will be what is a low pressure area in the sea and how is it formed?
– Global warming is responsible for this.
– When the temperature of the sea increases or say when the sea starts heating up, the air rises up due to its heat and the surrounding air rushes to fill that empty space (it forms a vacuum area). This is called a low pressure area.
– Since the seas are very vast, this process becomes very vast.
– The hot air goes up and air from a large area comes here, but the air that rises up is also cold, because as we go to a height, the temperature decreases.
– In such a situation, the air above, which has become cold, also wants to come down and it turns into a storm.
– The air rotates very fast.
– The ocean contributes a lot to global warming or absorbing heat from the earth.

– These countries include India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Thailand, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Yemen.
– These 13 countries already keep a list of names.
– As soon as a cyclone hits any part of these countries, a different name from the list is assigned to the cyclone.
– This not only makes the cyclone easily identifiable but also helps in rescue operations.
– Once a cyclone is assigned, the names are rotated and are not used again. For example, the next cyclone after Fengal will be named Shakthi, as suggested by Sri Lanka.
