– Both sides are fighting for control.
– According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 413 people have died so far.
– One of them is an Indian.
– 3,551 people have been injured.
– The capital Khartoum has become the center of the war. Therefore, the airport here is also closed.
Many countries of the world are evacuating their citizens
– Several countries are running rescue operations to safely evacuate their citizens trapped in Sudan.
– India has named its rescue operation Operation Cauvery.
– So far, 9 countries, including the United States and Britain, have rescued their diplomats.
– Some countries, including the United States, have closed their embassies and airlifted their diplomats.
Two ways to rescue civilians under Operation Cauvery:
– The capital Khartoum is the center of the war and the airport here is closed. Therefore, it is difficult to evacuate people directly.
– The Indian Navy’s ship has reached Sudan. Attempts are being made to bring people from there.
– On the other hand, Air Force planes are at Jeddah Airport in Saudi Arabia.
– Saudi Arabia is also helping India to evacuate Indian citizens from Sudan.

– Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said that the work of evacuating Indians stranded in Sudan has begun.
– Around 500 citizens have already been brought to Port Sudan.
– Some more citizens are expected to reach there.
– We have named it ‘Operation Kaveri’.
– Our ships and aircraft are ready to bring back Indians.
– We are fully prepared to help our citizens.

What is happening in the civil war?
– The army staged a coup on October 25, 2021, in Sudan.
– Since then, the army has been running the country through the Universal Council.
– Its Chairman and the Chief of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Lieutenant General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, are Abdul Fatah Al-Burhan and Deputy Chairman.
– Both are now fighting, and the result is a civil war.
How did the paramilitary force become so strong?
– Actually, there was a rebellion in the western region of Darfur, Sudan in the 2000s.
– The army sought the help of the Janjaweed militia to deal with it.
– This militia eventually evolved into what is now known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
– In 2013, it was officially renamed to RSF.
– Since the coup in 2021, military rule has been imposed in Sudan.
– After that, tension began between the army and the RSF.
– In 2013, there were six thousand fighters in the RSF, but according to news agency Reuters, the number has increased to over one lakh in 2023.
– The RSF is responsible for patrolling the border with Libya. They prevent Eritrean and Ethiopian refugees from going to Europe.
– In July 2019, when there was civil war in Libya, RSF fighters were present. In the 2016 Yemeni civil war, there were 40,000 fighters.
