2. For which achievement (research) in the field of medicine, Mary E. Brunko, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi were selected for the Nobel Prize 2025?

a. For their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance
b. For the discovery of mRNA
c. For the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation
d. All of the above

Answer: a. For their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance

How to understand it –
– In simple terms, peripheral immune tolerance is the process by which our immune system recognizes the body’s own tissues and does not attack them.
– It protects the body from harming itself.
– A better understanding of this process can help in improving cancer treatments and increasing the success of organ transplants.
– The Nobel Committee stated that these scientific discoveries have given a new direction to medical science.

In detail –
– The three scientists received this award for their discoveries related to peripheral immune tolerance.
– They identified the defenders of the immune system, called Regulatory T cells (Tregs), laying the foundation for a new field of research.
– These discoveries have led to the development of potential therapeutic treatments, which are now being tested in clinical trials.
– It is hoped that these findings will make it possible to treat or cure autoimmune diseases, provide more effective cancer therapies, and prevent severe complications after stem cell transplantation.

When and how was the discovery made?
– Shimon Sakaguchi conducted the first significant research in 1995.
– At that time, scientists believed that immune tolerance developed only through a process called central tolerance.
– Sakaguchi discovered a previously unknown class of immune cells that protect the body from autoimmune diseases.

– Marie Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell made another important discovery in 2001. They found that a particular strain of mice was highly prone to autoimmune diseases because of a mutation in a gene, which they named Foxp3.
– They also demonstrated that in humans, a mutation in the equivalent gene causes a severe autoimmune disease called IPEX (Immune dysregulation, Polyendocrinopathy, Enteropathy, X-linked syndrome).
– Two years later, Sakaguchi connected these discoveries and proved that the Foxp3 gene controls the development of the cells he had discovered in 1995.
– These cells, now known as Regulatory T cells (Tregs), monitor other immune cells and ensure that our immune system accepts our own tissues and does not attack them.

Prize Money
– The three scientists will be awarded on December 10 in Stockholm with a prize of ₹10.3 crore, along with a gold medal and a certificate.

d. Only Geoffrey E. Hinton

Answer: b. John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis

– The announcement of this award was made on 7 October 2025.

– John Clarke (United Kingdom)
– Michel H. Devoret (France)
– John M. Martinis (USA)

– These three scientists collaborated and designed experiments that allowed a deeper understanding of how the quantum world works.
– This is a field where, at the ultra-microscopic level, objects, when divided into individual fundamental particles, stop behaving according to ordinary expectations.

Note: The three scientists will equally share a prize of 11 million Swedish Kronor, which is approximately ₹1 crore.

4. For which achievement (research) in the field of physics, John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis were selected for the Nobel Prize 2025?

a. For the technique to observe electron motion in attoseconds
b. For using statistical physics concepts in the development of artificial neural networks
c. For the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in electric circuits
d. For understanding climate models and complex systems

Answer: c. For the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in electric circuits

Why this award was given
– This award was given for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in electric circuits.
– Quantum tunneling is the process in which a particle passes through a barrier instead of going over it, which is impossible according to classical physics.
– In everyday life, we see a ball bounce back when it hits a wall, but in the quantum world, tiny particles sometimes pass through the wall to the other side. This is called quantum tunneling.
– Energy quantization means that the energy of a system is not continuous, but exists in discrete levels. This is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics. At the macroscopic level, this effect has been observed in superconducting circuits, where energy levels—such as magnetic flux or current—can only take specific values.
– This phenomenon has been clearly demonstrated in devices like Josephson Junctions and SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices).

The scientists conducted their experiments at University of California:
– In 1984 and 1985, John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis performed a special experiment at the University of California.
– They created an electric circuit using two superconductors (materials that can conduct electricity without resistance).
– Between the two superconductors, there was a thin layer that normally blocks electric current. Yet, they observed that all the charged particles in the circuit behaved collectively as if they were a single particle.

100-year-old Quantum Mechanics still amazes
– Ole Eriksson, Chair of the Nobel Committee, said that quantum mechanics is almost a hundred years old, yet new discoveries related to it continue to amaze us. This discovery is not only fascinating but also highly practical. Computers, smartphones, and the Internet have all become possible because of quantum science.
– The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences explained that the tiny transistors (switches) in computer chips are a very good example of quantum technology.
– The discoveries of this year’s Nobel Prize-winning scientists could make it easier to develop many new technologies in the future, such as:
– Super secure codes (Quantum Cryptography)
– Ultra-fast computers (Quantum Computers)
– Precision measuring devices (Quantum Sensors)
