Significance of the Theme
– Pollution from plastic worsens the state of biodiversity loss, climate change, and environmental degradation.
– Every year, 11 million tonnes of plastic enter water bodies, while microplastics from landfills and sewage pollute the soil.
– The global cost of plastic pollution is estimated at USD 300–600 billion per year.
– India generates approximately 9.3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, accounting for around 20% of the global total.

– Wealthy countries hoarded millions of vaccine doses, leaving poorer countries without access to vaccines.
– According to the Nature journal, if vaccines had been distributed equitably, over one million lives could have been saved. So far, more than 7 million deaths have occurred due to COVID-19.
– A 2021 report attributed the pandemic’s severe crisis to global inequality, strategic failures, and lack of cooperation.
– For these reasons, WHO member countries came together to work on a treaty, which took three and a half years and 13 rounds of meetings to develop.
