– The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued an advisory on April 6, 2023.
– According to it, online games involving betting, which promote the dream of earning money by placing bets through attractive advertisements, will be banned.
– You may have seen various types of advertisements like “create a team, win a prize, place a bet and change your luck.”
– The government has stated that if any media platform advertises betting directly or indirectly, it will be considered a violation of the law.

No approval for betting games
– IT Minister Chandra Shekhar said that online games will be investigated by the self-regulatory organization (SRO).
Only those online games which do not involve any kind of betting or gambling will be approved.

Illegal advertisements of betting platforms
– As per the Information Technology (Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the Ministry has said that advertisements of betting platforms are an illegal activity and cannot be shown on digital media.

Law of three months in jail for gambling
– As per the Public Gambling Act, 1867, gambling is a crime.
– Running a gambling house, participating in it, placing bets, and buying or selling equipment related to gambling are all categorized as crimes.

– After the Second World War, the Soviet Union and the United States emerged as the two biggest powers wanting to assert their dominance over the world. This led to deteriorating relations between the US and the Soviet Union, and the beginning of the Cold War.
