– Suriname is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in June 2023. On this occasion, President Draupadi Murmu visited there.
– President Chandrika Prasad Santokhi of the Republic of Suriname awarded her the “The Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star” on June 5, 2023.
– This is the highest civilian award in Suriname.
– President Murmu has become the first Indian to receive this award.
– President Murmu said that this award is given to 140 million Indians.

Relations between India and Suriname
– India has a 150-year-old relationship with Suriname.
– At that time, the British took Indians there as indentured laborers. Due to this, there is a significant number of Indians in Suriname.
– 27.4% of the population in Suriname are of Indian origin.
President Chandrika Prasad Santokhi is also of Indian origin.
– After independence, India established diplomatic relations with Suriname in 1976 and opened its embassy in Paramaribo in 1977.
– Suriname has also received recognition as the leading foreign country in the field of promotion and dissemination of the Hindi language.
– The World Hindi Conference 2003 was held in Paramaribo.

– Total bilateral trade in 2022-23: $51.31 million US dollars

– Suriname’s imports to India: wood, aluminum, and electrical machinery.

– Chandrika Prasad Santokhi, born in an Indian-Surinamese Hindu family, is known as Chan Santokhi.
– Chandrika Prasad Santokhi took the oath of the presidency in July 2020 in the Sanskrit language.
– He was the chief guest at the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan on January 9, 2021.

Three MOUs signed between the two countries:
– These MOUs were signed in the fields of health, agriculture, and capacity building.
