a. 5.5%
b. 5.8%
c. 6.2%
d. 6.5%

Answer: d. 6.5%

– The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 6.50% for the 11th consecutive time.
– The MPC meeting took place on December 6, 2024.
– The MPC revised its GDP growth forecast for India for the financial year 2024-25, lowering it from the previous estimate of 7.2% to 6.6%.

What is the Repo Rate (Repurchase Rate)?
– In simple terms, banks lend us money, and we pay interest on that loan.
– Similarly, banks also require large sums of money for their day-to-day operations, which they borrow from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
– The interest rate at which the RBI lends to banks is called the repo rate.

Impact of the Repo Rate on the Common Man
– The RBI uses the repo rate as a powerful tool to combat inflation.
– When inflation is high, the RBI increases the repo rate to reduce the money flow in the economy.
– If banks can borrow at lower interest rates (i.e., when the repo rate is low), they can offer cheaper loans to their customers.
– Conversely, if the RBI raises the repo rate, borrowing becomes more expensive for banks, which in turn makes loans costlier for customers.

Reverse Repo Rate
– This is the opposite of the repo rate.
– When banks have surplus funds after daily operations, they deposit this money with the RBI.
– The RBI pays interest on these deposits.
– The rate at which the RBI pays interest on these funds is called the reverse repo rate.

Ex-Officio Chairman of the Monetary Policy Committee
– The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Shaktikanta Das.
