– After tensions in India-Canada relations in 2023, this meeting is being considered an important step towards improving relations and reviving the multi-dimensional partnership.

Uranium Supply Agreement between India and Canada
– On 2 March 2026, India and Canada signed a 10-year uranium supply agreement worth $1.9 billion for Indian nuclear energy reactors.
– This will help in boosting India’s nuclear energy.
– Canada is one of the world’s largest producers of uranium.
– Canada’s company Cameco plays an important role in the global supply chain.
– Under this agreement, the Canadian company Cameco will supply approximately 10,000 tonnes of uranium to India from 2027 to 2035 for $1.9 billion.
– This agreement comes more than a decade after another deal between 2015 and 2020 for the supply of 2,700 tonnes of uranium worth about $262 million.
– However, amid growing tensions between the Justin Trudeau government and the Modi government at that time, the earlier agreement could not fulfill its promise.

– Major uranium producing areas: Jharkhand (Jaduguda), Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Meghalaya.
– Problem: Most of India’s uranium is low grade (0.03%–0.06%). Mining is expensive and processing is difficult.
– Despite this, India is able to meet only about 50–60% of its requirement domestically.

Nuclear Power in India

– Total installed nuclear capacity: ~7,000+ megawatts
– Target: ~22,000 megawatts by 2032

India’s three-stage nuclear programme (Homi Bhabha model) is as follows:
– First stage – Natural uranium-based PHWR reactors
– Second stage – Fast breeder reactors (plutonium-based)
– Third stage – Thorium-based reactors (utilizing India’s vast thorium reserves)
– Currently, India is still largely dependent on the first stage; therefore, uranium supply is extremely essential.
