A horrific accident between two express trains and a goods train took place in which district of Odisha in June 2023?

– A horrific rail accident occurred on the evening of June 2, 2023, between two express trains and a freight train in the Balasore district of Odisha.
– As a result, more than 238 people lost their lives.
– The newspaper “The Hindu” has called it India’s fourth deadliest train accident.

How the horrific accident happened:
– The train collision took place around 7 p.m. on June 2, 2023.
– This incident occurred near the Bahanga railway station in the Balasore district.
– While the Yeshvantpur-Howrah Express was running, two compartments derailed from the track.
– These compartments collided with the Coromandel Express coming from the opposite direction.
– Afterward, around 17 compartments of the Coromandel Express derailed. Some of these compartments jumped and collided with a stationary freight train.
– One collision after another occurred here, which was extremely devastating.

How many people died?
– The number of fatalities has been increasing since the accident.
– At the time this video was being made, more than 236 people had lost their lives, while over 900 people were injured.
– Many people got trapped under and inside the train compartments.
– Efforts were made to extricate people by cutting through the compartments.
– The passengers of the Coromandel Express suffered the most damage.
– The work of removing the deceased and injured from the affected compartments continued throughout the night.
– Gas cutters were used to extract bodies from underneath the derailed compartments.
– Local people were the first to provide assistance, followed by the district administration, and later the teams from SDRF and NDRF arrived.
– The accident site was littered with piles of bodies. The entire atmosphere is filled with the screams of the injured and the sorrow of those who have lost their loved ones.

Technique to Prevent Accidents – Kavach (Safety Shield)
– Its testing was conducted on March 4, 2022.
– At that time, the Rail Minister and the Chairman of the Railway Board were on board the train for the testing.
– Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnav was on the engine of one train, while Chairman Vinay Kumar Tripathi was on the engine of another train.
– Both trains were running face to face on the same track at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour.
– Both trains stopped 380 meters before colliding.

What is the Safety Kavach System
– It controls overspeeding.
– In the event of any danger, the train automatically applies the brakes.
– The objective is that no matter how fast the trains are, they will not collide due to the Kavach system.
– When the train approaches the signals, it will automatically sound an alarm.
– The Kavach system installed in the two engines prevents a collision from occurring.
– During emergencies, the system will send an SOS message from the train.

Major Rail Accidents in the Last 10 Years
– June 2, 2023 – A severe accident between two express trains and a goods train in Balasore, Odisha.
– August 18, 2017 – Puri-Haridwar Utkal Express derailed in Muzaffarnagar. This accident resulted in the death of 23 people and left nearly 60 injured.
– November 20, 2016 – Indore-Patna Express (Train No. 19321) derailed near Pukhrayan, Kanpur. In this accident, 150 passengers lost their lives, and over 150 were injured.
– May 26, 2014 – Gorakhdham Express heading towards Gorakhpur collided with a stationary goods train near Khalilabad station in Sant Kabir Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. This accident resulted in the death of 25 people and left over 50 injured.
– May 22, 2012 – A goods train collided with the Hampi Express (Hubli-Bangalore) near Andhra Pradesh. Around 25 people lost their lives when four coaches of the train derailed and one coach caught fire, while 43 people were injured.
