1. What was India’s real GDP growth rate in the second quarter (July–September 2025) of the financial year 2025–26?
a. 8.2%
b. 7.8%
c. 7.4%
d. 6.4%
Answer: a. 8.2%

– In the second quarter (July–September 2025) of FY 2025–26, India’s real GDP growth increased to 8.2%.
– In the first quarter (April–June), the GDP growth rate was 7.8%.
– Overall, the growth rate for the first half of this financial year (April–September 2025) stood at 8%.
– The GDP growth rate will be considered as 8.0%.
– Note: In the same quarter a year earlier (Q2 FY26), it was 5.6%.
Two types of GDP
– GDP is of two types: Real GDP and Nominal GDP.
– Real GDP is calculated at the value of goods and services using the base year (currently 2011–12) or stable prices.
– Nominal GDP is calculated at current prices.
– In the second quarter (July–September 2025) of FY 2025–26, the nominal GDP growth rate was 8.7%.
Better-than-expected figures
– GDP figures have exceeded expectations. Strong manufacturing and services sectors—especially financial, real estate, and professional services—contributed to this.
– Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this data reflects the impact of India’s growth-oriented policies and reforms.
Who released the GDP growth rate data?
– The National Statistical Office (NSO) released the provisional GDP data on 28 November 2025.
What is GDP?
– Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one of the most common indicators used to track an economy’s health.
– GDP is the total value of all goods and services produced in a country in one year or one quarter.
– It is the biggest measure of a country’s economic development.
– Higher GDP means the economy is growing and creating more jobs.
– Lower GDP means economic decline and rising unemployment.
– The current base year for GDP is 2011–12. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is working on an update. A new GDP and CPI series is expected to be released in early or mid-2026.
How GDP is calculated:
GDP = C + I + G + (X – M)
C = Consumer Expenditure
I = Industrial Investment
G = Government Expenditure
X = Export
M = Import
People spent more, so GDP increased
– About 60% of GDP is private consumption by common people like us.
– In the last quarter (July–September 2025), this spending growth increased from 6.4% to 7.9%.
– Last year, people were spending cautiously, but this time spending increased significantly—boosting this 60% engine.
– Apart from consumption, strong performance in the manufacturing sector also increased growth. Manufacturing grew 9.1% in the second quarter, compared to just 2.2% in the same period last year.

2. Which of the following grades did the International Monetary Fund (IMF) give to India’s GDP and national accounts data?
a. A
b. B
c. C
d. D
Answer: c. C
– In November 2025, the IMF gave India’s national accounts statistics—including GDP and Gross Value Added (GVA)—a ‘C’ grade.
– This assessment is part of the IMF’s annual Article IV Consultation, crucial for economic monitoring and policymaking.
IMF evaluates data quality in four categories:
A: No shortcomings; fully reliable
B: Minor shortcomings; adequate for monitoring
C: Some significant shortcomings affecting monitoring
D: Severe shortcomings, limiting data usability
India’s grade:
– National accounts (including GDP and GVA): C
– CPI inflation: B
– Government finances, external sector, monetary & financial statistics, cross-sector consistency: B
– Overall grade: B
Why did IMF give a ‘C’ grade?
– Old base year: The 2011–12 base year no longer reflects the current economy, leading to underestimation of the informal sector. MoSPI is working on updating it; the new series is expected in early/mid-2026.
– Inflation adjustment: WPI is used due to the absence of a Producer Price Index (PPI), affecting real GDP estimates.
– Discrepancies between production & expenditure approaches: Large gaps due to inadequate expenditure data and poor reporting in the informal sector.
– Lack of seasonal adjustment: Quarterly data do not account for seasonal fluctuations.
– Granularity issues: Limited detailed breakdown of Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) by institutional sectors; quarterly estimates lack detail.
Impact of the IMF report:
– Policy impact: Shortcomings affect monitoring and economic analysis, increasing uncertainty for monetary policy and investment decisions.
– Global image: Lower grade may affect India’s credibility for foreign investors.
– Positive side: Updated data will better represent the informal sector and spending patterns.

6. Which neighbouring country printed its map on the ₹100 note, including Indian territories of Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani?
a. China
b. Nepal
c. Pakistan
d. Myanmar
Answer: b. Nepal

– On 26 November 2025, Nepal’s central bank issued new ₹100 notes with such a map.
– The map shows India’s Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura regions as part of Nepal.
– India termed it an “artificial enlargement” and lodged its protest.
– The issuance date on the banknote is mentioned as 2081 BS, corresponding to 2024.
– On 18 June 2020, Nepal amended its Constitution to include Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura in its political map, citing the Treaty of Sugauli.
Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura
– These three regions are part of the Pithoragarh district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
– This area is extremely strategic because of China.
– India is at a higher altitude here and China is lower. In case of a war, India can have an advantage over China from this location.
What is Nepal’s map dispute?
– According to the Treaty of Sugauli (1816) signed between the British and the King of Nepal, the Mahakali River is the international border between India and Nepal.
– But like many other rivers, it has multiple streams that come together to form the main river, and this is also true for the Mahakali River.
– India believes that the stream of the Mahakali River flowing near Lipulekh is the actual border.
– But Nepal claims that the stream originating from Limpiyadhura is the real boundary between India and Nepal.
– This dispute resurfaced in November 2019 when India published a revised political map after creating the new Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
– Later in 2020, then-Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli — considered pro-China — made it a political issue. Parliament then passed a new map.
– Meaning, before 2020, Nepal itself showed these three regions (Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, Kalapani) as part of India in its own maps.
– This area is around 400 square kilometers. India has actual control over it.
Rise of nationalism in Nepal
– Just as “Akhanda Bharat” is discussed in India and excites some groups and youth,
– Similarly, political parties in Nepal talk about “Greater Nepal.”
– They believe that the whole of Uttarakhand, parts of Himachal Pradesh, and even Sikkim belong to them.
– That is why, when the new map was passed in 2020, people in Nepal celebrated Diwali, believing they had achieved the “first step” of victory.
– China’s role in this entire matter is highly suspicious.
India’s objection
– India’s Ministry of External Affairs has said that this is a “unilateral step” and it “changes no reality on the ground.”
– India said that during the past year of ongoing dispute, it had already warned Nepal that “artificial enlargement of claims” would not be accepted.
– MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that discussions between India and Nepal on boundary and mapping issues are ongoing.
– He also said that, according to India, Nepal’s claims are neither correct nor based on historical facts.
Nepal (Basic Facts)
– Capital: Kathmandu
– Prime Minister: Sushila Karki
– President: Ram Chandra Paudel
– Population: 29.6 million (2025)
