– Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been found guilty of contempt by the Surat Session Court in a case of defamation.
– The court has sentenced Rahul Gandhi to 2 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15,000.
– However, the court has suspended the sentence for 30 days, giving him the opportunity to appeal in the higher court.
Case for which the sentence was pronounced –
– During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi had said during a rally, “Why does the nickname of all thieves happen to be Modi?”
– Based on this case, petitioner and MLA Purnesh Modi had filed a case of defamation against Rahul Gandhi in Surat court.
What did Rahul Gandhi say –
– Before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi had spoken about the nickname “Modi” at a rally in Kolar, Karnataka.
– During the rally, Rahul accused the Modi government of increasing corruption.
He had said in his speech, ‘सभी चोरों का सरनेम मोदी क्यों होता है, चाहे वह ललित मोदी हो या नीरव मोदी हो चाहे नरेंद्र मोदी।’
– ‘नीरव मोदी, ललित मोदी, नरेंद्र मोदी अभी और ढूढेंगे तो और भी नाम निकल जाएंगे।’
IPC Sections 499 and 500
– Section 499 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) defines defamation, while Section 500 explains the punishment for it.
IPC Section 499 – If someone makes an imputation concerning another person, which harms that person’s reputation, it is called defamation. However, there are several exceptions to this, such as if the accusation is true, then it won’t be considered defamation.
IPC Section 500 – Whoever defames another person will be punished with simple imprisonment for up to two years, or with a fine, or both.
What did Rahul Gandhi say after the court verdict?
– Rahul Gandhi also presented his side in court. According to his lawyer, “Rahul said that his intention was not wrong while making the statement. I was raising my voice against corruption.”

Padma Awards 2023:
– The central government announced the names of the Padma award winners on the eve of the 74th Republic Day celebrations in 2023.
– Now, President Draupadi Murmu has conferred the Padma awards to some of the awardees on March 22, 2023, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
– In the year 2023, a total of 106 Padma award winners were announced.
– These include 6 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan, and 91 Padma Shri awardees.

– He was also honored with the Royal Gold Medal by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
2) S.M. Krishna
– S.M. Krishna’s full name is Somnathhalli Mallaiah Krishna.
– He served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004.
– He was the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008.
– He was included in the Central Cabinet in the year 2009.
3) Zakir Hussain
– Ustad Zakir Hussain is India’s most famous tabla player.
– He is the son of Ustad Allah Rakha, also a tabla player.

– He was honored with the Padma Shri in 1988 and the Padma Bhushan in 2002.
– In addition, he also received the prestigious Grammy Award for music in 1992 and 2009.
4) Dilip Mahalanabis
– Dilip Mahalanabis was an Indian pediatrician.
– He passed away on October 16, 2022.
– In 1971, he saved the lives of people during the Bangladesh Liberation War by using Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS).
– He led the efforts of the Johns Hopkins Center.
– Dilip Mahalanabis discovered the correct proportion of ORS to be used, which can help in preventing dehydration and water deficiency in the body.
5) Srinivasa Varadhan
– He is an Indian-American mathematician.
– He is known for his fundamental contributions to probability theory.
– He is considered one of the most influential mathematicians of the 20th century.
– In 2007, he became the first Asian to receive the Abel Prize.
6) Mulayam Singh Yadav
– Mulayam Singh Yadav was last elected as a Member of Parliament from the Mainpuri constituency in the year 2019.
– In 1977, Mulayam Singh became a minister in UP from the Janata Party for the first time.
– He served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh three times (1989-91, 1993-95, and 2003-2007).
