3. DRDO successfully tested the hypersonic missile for the first time in November 2024, what is the speed of such a missile?

a. Same speed as sound (1234.8 kmph)
b. 2 times faster than sound (2469.6 kmph)
c. 3 times faster than sound (3704.4 kmph)
d. 5 times faster than sound (6174 kmph)

Answer: d. 5 times faster than sound (6174 kmph)

– Who conducted the missile test: Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO)
– When was it launched: On the night of November 16, 2024
– Where was it launched from: APJ Abdul Kalam Azad Island near the coast of Odisha
– Missile speed: 5 times faster than sound (6174 kmph)
– Missile range: More than 1500 kilometers
– Where can it be launched from: Air, water, and land (meaning triad capability)

India in a special group of countries
– With the successful testing of this missile, India has joined the group of select countries that have such military technology.
– The USA, Russia, and China have the most advanced hypersonic weapons programs.
– Russia is the only country that has used a hypersonic missile named Kinzhal in war. It fired this missile on Ukraine in 2022.

Is the hypersonic missile ballistic or cruise?
– This missile of India can fly in both ballistic and cruise modes to destroy the target location.
– A ballistic missile reaches the lower orbit of the Earth to attack the enemy.
– Whereas a cruise missile flies at low altitudes to reach the target.

Special features of the hypersonic missile
– Due to high speed and low trajectory, i.e., flight at low altitude, it is almost impossible to detect them by the radar of any country, including the USA. For this reason, no missile defense system in the world can shoot them down.
– Hypersonic missiles are capable of carrying several tons of nuclear weapons. These missiles can carry 480 kilograms of nuclear or traditional weapons. For countries possessing nuclear weapons, this missile is considered important.
– Hypersonic missiles are equipped with maneuverable technology, i.e., they are experts in changing paths in the air. Because of this, they can target even moving locations. This capability makes it difficult to escape from them.

Indian hypersonic missile is based on HSTDV
– In 2020, DRDO conducted a successful test of a Hypersonic Technology Demonstrated Vehicle (HSTDV).
– According to reports, India is progressing towards making its hypersonic cruise missile using HSTDV, which has now been successful.
– A scramjet engine has been used for this.

BrahMos-II will become a hypersonic missile
– Along with the Indian hypersonic missile, another hypersonic missile is under development in India.
– India is working on the development of the BrahMos-II missile in collaboration with Russia, which is a hypersonic missile.
– BrahMos-II will have a range of up to 1500 km and a speed 7-8 times faster than sound (about 9000 km/h). Its testing is expected by 2024.

– On November 18, 2024, air pollution in Delhi was 26 times higher than the limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO), with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 494.

What is GRAP?
– The full name is Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
– GRAP is a set of emergency measures designed to prevent further deterioration of air quality once it reaches a certain threshold in the Delhi-NCR region.
– Approved by the Supreme Court in 2016 and notified in 2017, this plan was developed after multiple meetings held by the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) with state government representatives and experts.

Different stages of GRAP:
– Stage I: Activated when AQI falls in the ‘Poor’ category (201-300).
– Stage II: Activated when AQI falls in the ‘Very Poor’ category (301-400).
– Stage III: Activated when AQI falls in the ‘Severe’ category (401-450).
– Stage IV: Activated when AQI crosses 450, entering the ‘Severe+’ category.

What is permitted under GRAP Stage IV?
GRAP Stage IV states the following:
1. Ban on the entry of trucks into Delhi, except those carrying essential goods/services. However, all LNG/CNG/electric/BS-VI diesel trucks will be allowed entry.
– Prohibit entry of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) registered outside Delhi into the city, except those carrying essential goods/services. Only EV/CNG/BS-VI diesel vehicles are permitted.
– Strict ban on the operation of medium goods vehicles (MGVs) and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) registered in Delhi and running on BS-IV or below diesel engines, except for those carrying essential goods/services.

– The central government may take suitable decisions regarding allowing work-from-home for staff in central government offices.
– State governments may consider additional emergency measures like closing colleges/educational institutions, shutting down non-essential commercial activities, or implementing odd-even restrictions for vehicle movement based on registration numbers.

What is the role of stubble burning in air pollution?
– Stubble burning is a traditional practice where farmers burn leftover paddy straw after harvesting.
– Particularly in Punjab and Haryana, farmers have a short window during October-November to clear fields for sowing wheat in winter.
– The environmental impacts of stubble burning have been known since the 1990s.
– Rising labor costs, caused by the use of mechanical equipment like combine harvesters, make it expensive for farmers to collect scattered paddy straw.
– With limited income from farming, farmers resort to burning stubble.
– There is a strong correlation between the direction of winds from Punjab and Haryana and the resulting pollution levels in Delhi.

Is stubble burning the sole culprit behind Delhi’s pollution?
– About 55% of Delhi’s pollution originates outside its regional boundaries.
– According to the India Meteorological Department, December, January, and February are considered official winter months. During this time, atmospheric conditions trap pollutants and prevent them from dispersing.
– Even when stubble burning nearly ceases, data compiled from urban emissions indicates that from 2016-2023, the AQI consistently remained in the ‘Very Poor’ and ‘Severe’ (400+) categories.
– This suggests that apart from stubble burning, other sources significantly contribute to air pollution.
