6. Which state became the first to launch a tribal-focused genome sequencing project?

a. Jharkhand
b. Bihar
c. Gujarat
d. Uttar Pradesh

Answer: c. Gujarat

– The project aims to understand why certain genetic diseases are increasing among tribal people.
– This trend is mostly linked to intermarriage within one’s own community or relatives (endogamy) and limited genetic diversity (very little variation in people’s genes).
– By collecting DNA samples from 31 tribal communities across 11 districts of Gujarat, researchers are creating a reference database that could redefine the way genetic conditions are diagnosed and managed in these groups, the state government said in a November 8, 2025, advertisement.

Why Genome Sequencing is Important for Tribals
– Gujarat’s tribal population has long faced an increasing incidence of inherited diseases such as thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.
– Many of these disorders go undetected until their advanced stages, when they become more difficult to treat.
– With genome sequencing, scientists can detect mutations, create low-cost diagnostic panels, and even perform prenatal or embryonic testing during IVF procedures.

Tribal Pride Year declared – The Gujarat government officially declared the year 2025 as the ‘Tribal Pride Year’ to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Lord Birsa Munda.

High-quality genome analysis at low cost
– GBRC has three genome sequencing platforms, including a long-read sequencer.
– This sequencer analyzes 5,000 to 10,000 base pairs, which helps understand complex mutations.
– These platforms were inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
– Initially used to combat COVID-19, they are now being used for broader genomic research.
– Gujarat can analyze 25 to 50 genomes per run in 48 to 72 hours.
– By reducing costs, GBRC has reduced the cost per sample from ₹85,000 to approximately ₹60,000.

7. According to the national survey of AIIMS Delhi, how many ophthalmologists are there per million population in India, which is a ‘huge imbalance’?

a. 20
b. 15
c. 10
d. 08

Answer: b. 15 (i.e., one ophthalmologist per 65,221 people).

– The survey revealed that the majority of the 7,901 ophthalmological institutions surveyed were private (70.6%), while the number of public and non-government service providers was only 15.6% and 13.8%, respectively.
– According to the study, currently there are 20,944 ophthalmologists in the country, while at least 25,000 specialists will be needed by 2030 to achieve the goal of preventing blindness.

Survey Leadership and Objectives
– The survey was led by Dr. Praveen Vashisht, Professor and Officer-in-Charge of Community Ophthalmology.
– The survey aimed to determine the number, location, and status of eye care services in India—such as doctors, nurses, paramedics, and hospitals.
– The survey also examined India’s progress in achieving the goals of Vision 2020, an initiative to eliminate blindness.
– According to Dr. Vashisht, while the country has a wide network of eye hospitals, the distribution of doctors, optometrists (who perform eye examinations and primary care) and other resources is uneven.
– While many urban areas have adequate doctors and equipment, rural or remote areas face a shortage.
– The report stated that there are 20,944 ophthalmologists and 17,849 optometrists working in India.
However, the goal under the ‘Vision 2020’ program was to have at least 25,000 ophthalmologists and 48,000 hospital-based paramedic staff in the country to ensure access to eye care for every person in need.
– Currently, there are only 0.85 optometrists per ophthalmologist. This means that each ophthalmologist does not even have a full-fledged assistant who can perform eye examinations or treat common eye diseases.
– The survey found huge variations between states—for example, Puducherry has 127 ophthalmologists per 1 million population, while Ladakh has only 2.
