2. Which company started work on Project ‘Suncatcher’ to set up a data center in space?
a. ISRO
b. Google
c. Meta
d. Microsoft
Answer: b. Google
– Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that his company is working on Project Suncatcher.
– Its objective is to establish solar-powered data centers in space by 2027.
– Small racks of machines will be sent into space in low Earth orbit, placed in satellites, tested, and then expanded further from there.
– He further stated that within a decade, building extraterrestrial data centers would become commonplace.
– It is being considered a future sustainable option to address rising energy consumption, rapidly increasing AI demand, and limited geographical resources.

Core concept of the project
– Developing heavy computing capacity such as AI using solar energy in space.
– Installing Google’s TPU (Tensor Processing Unit)-based mini data centers on satellites.
– Creating network-like capability by connecting satellites through laser-based optical links.
– Reducing pressure on resource-intensive data centers on Earth.
Why is the project necessary?
– Rising AI computing demand: Demand for large language models (LLMs), generative AI, robotics, and cloud AI is increasing rapidly, putting immense pressure on energy, water, and land resources of traditional data centers.
– Energy crisis and environmental pressure: Global data centers currently consume about 2–3% of the world’s total electricity, with massive water usage for cooling, increasing environmental stress.
– Continuous availability of solar energy: Sunlight in space is continuous and more intense, enabling clean energy-based computing.
– Land and geographical constraints: Scarcity of land for large data centers and rising local objections (heat island effect, water usage issues).
How will it work?
– Satellites will be deployed in Low Earth Orbit.
– Each satellite will have solar panels, AI computing units (TPUs), and cooling systems.
– Satellites will function like a mesh network.
– Data flow will occur between Earth and satellites, and satellite-to-satellite through optical laser links.
– Two prototypes are planned to be launched in 2027.
Challenges
– Damage to electronic chips due to radiation.
– Cooling technology is more difficult than on Earth.
– Repair and upgrades are almost impossible.
Very high launch costs.
– Expensive specialized hardware and rocket services.
– Which companies want to build data centers in space?
– Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos also intends to move in this direction. A key objective of his space company Blue Origin is to shift polluting industries away from Earth.
– In early 2025, Lonestar Data Holdings sent a mini data center to the Moon under an Intuitive Machines lunar mission. This data center weighs one kilogram and has 8 terabytes of SSD storage capacity.
– OpenAI CEO Sam Altman proposed a Dyson Sphere–like structure of AI data centers encircling the solar system to harness solar energy.
What is a data center?
– A data center is a large and secure building/facility where computer servers, storage systems, network equipment, and software are installed.
– These servers run the world’s internet services—such as Google Search, YouTube, WhatsApp, Amazon, cloud storage, AI systems, banking, and government and private portals and apps.
– A data center can also be called the “brain of the Internet.”
What does a data center contain?
– Servers: Computers that store, process, and transfer data.
– Storage systems: To securely store photos, videos, emails, documents, bank records, website data, etc.
– Networking equipment: Such as routers and switches that manage internet traffic.
– Cooling systems: Large ACs, cooling units, and chillers to prevent servers from overheating.
– Power infrastructure: 24×7 power supply through generators, batteries, UPS, and substations.
